It’s no secret that LGBTQ people face a variety of specific barriers when it comes to healthcare. While there have been some strides in the awareness and healthcare of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer patients, there are still some serious gaps that exist across the country. Many still lack access to LGBTQ-focused healthcare that feels safe & inclusive. Everyone deserves respectful, competent, equal care regardless of their sexual or gender identity. Meaning, when you walk into a health facility you should feel comfortable and safe about sharing every aspect of your physical, sexual, and mental health with an informed, accepting provider.

What we do know is that many lesbian, gay, and bisexual patients don’t open up about their sexual orientation with healthcare providers, and transgender patients often find unique challenges when looking for competent care. Fortunately, the ACA provides unprecedented federal protections for LGBTQ people by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex, which has been interpreted as including both sexual orientation and gender identity.

To help ease some of the issues that come up when looking for a healthcare provider, we’ve come up with some tips for choosing an LGBTQ-inclusive healthcare provider. We also created a FREE guide that includes all of our tips. Grab it here and save to your computer for future reference.

The first and often most difficult part of looking for a healthcare provider is communication. One essential part of any good experience with a healthcare provider is to be open. If you’re uncomfortable, move on.  You deserve and are entitled to quality care, so if you don’t feel comfortable with your current provider, it’s ok to look for someone new – someone who sees, hears, and values your health just as you do.
